Importance of commitment and dedication as a Yoga Teacher?
I believe that any teacher, of any subject has a great commitment and dedication to respect, but overall a yoga teacher about who we are specifically talking about in the following text.
Starting with the commitment of the yoga teacher, I believe it to be towards a) the discipline and/or subjects, and b) the student(s). In regards to point a), the discipline or subject: I understand it to be almost like a vow that one gives towards the discipline, in this case the Yoga teacher towards Yoga. Once one has decided to teach this ancient discipline there should be a respect towards its guideline and traditions, as these define the true discipline. These guidelines and traditions can be studied through respected scriptures and publications, but overall and most importantly they should be learned and understood through an experienced and trusted teachers of this discipline. If else, one decides to teach something else, e.g. a variation or modification with new rules, than it should simply be assume as something else and kept very clear in the presentation of that different discipline which is not to be called Yoga.
In regards to point b), the commitment towards the student(s): once the teacher accepts a student and a student a teacher, there is a bond. Although it always takes two to create a bond, the teacher is the one from which the student wants to learn and therefore the teacher has a special commitment towards the student. This bond is based on trust, the student trusts the teacher to be committed towards: 1) the students learning and progress, 2) the students wellbeing, and 3) the discipline itself. In regards to the first point, the teacher commits to the students development, therefore the teacher would have a genuine interest in sharing knowledge in order to allow the student to grow and develop. In regards to the secons point, wellbeing, it would be related to the teachers commitment to maintain the conditions that have been provided once the teacher-student bond begun, e.g. items provides in the classes, maintaining planed schedules and times etc. The last point, the students trust upon the teacher towards the discipline, refers to the teachers honesty and motivation to transmit the true values and traditions of the discipline.
This last point brings me to the second part of the question asked at the beginning of this text: "Importance of dedication as a Yoga teacher"? Once the commitment towards the discipline reduces, the knowledge and experience of the teacher in the discipline reduces, hence the quality of the teaching necessarily deminishes and all this will have an impact on the student(s). In this sense, it is the teachers responsibility to be commited, which I understand to be through his/her dedication.
A teacher that is dedicated to the discipline, will make his/her life a constant study and discovery in the respective area. A dedicated teacher would always want to understand more and better and would be never satisfied as long as he/she does not keep going further in the study. Through this dedication and constant study, the teacher gives him/herself the opportunity to keep growing and developing through own practice and therefore experience. It is through this experience that the teacher can genuinely and truthfully transmit the disicipline to the student(s). Said this, it is very clear that the teacher is not only a teacher, but also and most importantly a practitioner. Only through the constant experience the teacher can share his/her insight and true knowledge to his/her student(s). Here the teached knowledge gains it's true value as it originates from genuity and real experiences in the teachers own life and practice. In this environment the bond between a teacher and a student can grow, the student will have the opportunity to develop his/her own practice.
To finalize, the opportunity to flourish and grow, for both, teacher and student, is depended on the yoga teachers commited and dedicated, hence it's great importance.
